Dr. Thompson is an eminent power generation and energy system design specialist with a deep expertise in long duration commercial energy storage.
He is currently the Asia-Pacific region Managing Director of PEM electrolyser manufacturer ITM Power PLC, Adjunct Associate Professor at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Institute for Future Environments (IFE), Adjunct Associate Professor at University of Western Australia (UWA) Future Energy Exports (FEnEx) Cooperative Research Centre and a visiting fellow at Australian National University (ANU) Institute for Climate Change, Energy and Disaster Solutions.
Dr. Thompson is a former Director of the Australian Hydrogen Council (AHC) and Chair of the Hydrogen Industry Advisory Group for the Australian Government’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Technology Organization (CSIRO).
Dr. Thompson has undertaken award-winning research Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Germany and QUT in the field of integrated hydrogen energy systems which has been regularly published in the USA and Europe. This research formed the foundation for development of several local reference sites for rapid response PEM electrolysers across the mobility, industrial chemistry and power to gas sectors.
Importantly, Dr. Thompson also has deep BESS expertise spanning the academic and industry spectrum, including being the former Yuasa batteries Asia-Pacific CEO.
Dr Thompson’s wider corporate career includes power generation, radiation processing, renewable energy, auto OEM, embedded networks and carbon consulting specializing in integrated, closed-loop system design and green energy systems. He has over three decades of specialist experience guiding clean technology deployment strategy for local and international Boards as a highly qualified Management Consultant / Executive Director with repeated success across the communications, automotive, property, power generation and industrial sectors throughout APAC, EU and North/Latin America.
